I RECENTLY contacted Newport Council to ask them to clarify the correct procedure for the collection of bulk refuse items from the Greenwood tower block as conflicting advice was being given to residents by NCC and NCH.

For many years, residents were able to leave bulk refuse for collection in a designated area on the ground floor.

This was stopped when this area became the storage area for two communal cardboard recycling bins.

Residents were then able to leave items overnight in the foyer for specialist collection the following morning provided that a note was attached to it stating that NCC has been contacted for collection and the date.

I was told by NCC that this arrangement still stands with them.

However, Newport City Homes has recently contacted NCC to say that due to health and safety issues, residents now have to take bulk refuse items outside to the back of the building for collection.

I would like to know how Newport City Homes expect a resident to singlehandedly carry an item such as a wardrobe, sofa, cooker, fridge freezer from the lift in the foyer out to the back of the building to the car park for collection.

Residents pay NCC for the collection of such items.

Would a member of NCH staff please come to Greenwood to show residents how to do this?

I would also like to know if the same rule applies to Hillview tower block which is also a Newport City Homes property.
