THIRTY nine years since they played The Pop Club in York, post-punk legends Wire will be back in our fair city at last on October 29 at The Crescent Community Venue in The Crescent.

"Having hit a peak of inventiveness and productivity, Wire have been playing strings of sold-out shows and achieving career- best album sales, as well as being cited as a strong influence by yet another generation of bands, including Parquet Courts and Savages," says Please Please You's Joe Coates, who is co-promoting the 7.30pm show with the Free Trade Agency.

Wire’s latest album, Silver/Lead is a set of songs by the Londoners that encompasses the optimistic dazzle of Diamonds In Cups, the menacing widescreen grandeur of Playing Harp For The Fishes and the breakneck-paced guitar pop of Short Elevated Period.

"Although their 15th studio album has been released on the 40th anniversary of Wire’s debut, Silver/Lead has nothing to do with the past and everything to do with the future," says Joe. Tickets have gone on sale at pleasepleaseyou.com or in person from The Crescent or Jumbo Records in Leeds.

Meanwhile, Curtis Eller's American Circus top tomorrow's Please Please You triple bill at The Crescent, where The River Geese and Washing Machine Repairman will be the support acts from 7.30pm.

Curtis Eller's brutish, inelegant rock'n'roll outfit are on a 16-date tour with their gospel music for atheists, wherein Eller's banjo-driven compositions describe a dreamlike vision of American history where all points in time have collapsed into one. Past recordings have seen a ghastly parade of historical luminaries, from Abraham Lincoln and Buster Keaton to Amelia Earhart and Joe Louis, sharing the spotlight with a host of Civil War generals and corrupt 19th century politicians.

Eller’s latest recording, How To Make It In Hollywood, is a collection of glittery show tunes, sentimental tear-jerkers and rock'n'roll roll rave-ups whose lyrics are populated by two-bit prize fighters, Hollywood has-beens, lapsed gospel singers and forgotten pop stars. Tickets are available from the above sources and on the door.
