YORK'S first vinyl café, FortyFive in Micklegate, will play host to its official launch party on September 15 with live DJs, music and a bar from 6pm to 10pm.

The café opened its doors for the first time on Bank Holiday Monday, when 20,000 people gathered on Micklegate for the Soapbox Challenge, after eight months of plotting and planning by three entrepreneurial friends who want to "bring back the spirit and community of discovering music in the heart of the city".

York’s first coffee shop cum record store is offering an extensive selection of new and collectable vinyl, Yorkshire-roasted coffee and snacks and sandwiches in the latest in a string of young and inspiring ventures in the rapidly reviving Micklegate.

“The aim of FortyFive Vinyl Café is to create a friendly, relaxed atmosphere where our customers can enjoy fantastic coffee without fuss and frills, good quality music, whether live or on vinyl, and a selection of simple, honest and tasty food” says Dom White, co-owner and vinyl enthusiast, who has opened the cafe with Steve McNichol and Dan Kentley.

"We want to be your day-time home away from home," says Steve. "A place to relax, unwind and escape the stress of the daily hustle," adds Dan.

All three are excited about their business's plans and its potential, but are equally keen to emphasise the home-grown, community spirit at the heart of this ambitious project.

Kentley, McNichol and White all hail from York and, after breaks away from the city, are each proud to call it home once again. True to their roots, the trio have sourced their coffee from the Indy Coffee Roasters company from down the road in Bradford and will be providing food from local suppliers, as well as hosting small-scale music events featuring local and some national celebrated musicians.

Both Kentley and White have toured internationally with bands from York, Kentley playing with RSJ, who have just called time after 15 years, and White playing America throughout 2015 with The Family Ruin. "So the music aspect of the venture will not disappoint," promises White. "Keep an eye out for announcements about intimate showcases set to take place later in the year." In the meantime, he confirms Upside Your Mind's John Baker-Hood will be among the DJs on September 15.

Opening hours are 8am to 8pm, Monday to Friday, 10am to 8pm, Saturdays, and 10am to 6pm on Sundays. "It'll be good to be open for people to come in before or after work," says White.
