Allies hold their own

Russians near Cracow

With the Emden destroyed , hats off to the gallant captain and crew of the Sydney, and with the Konigsberg rendered harmless, there are only seven German warships at large.

There is reason to believe we shall not have to wait long before getting further good news although from another quarter there may perhaps come intelligence of a less satisfactory character.

It may have been noticed that when we get bad tidings some compensating information is speedily to hand, but that unfortunately in the next report made public the alternation continues.

It is well to be prepared for this kind of thing as there is then no undue elation over gain it too much depression when a loss is recorded.

With regard to the land operations perhaps the most interesting paragraph in the Paris communique is that which states that the allies have consolidated the results achieved during the last few days on the greater part of the front line from La Bassee canal to Woevre.

On the other hand the next sentence which says it is so, noted moreover that we have made progress to the region of the Loivre, and it is not as good as it sounds.

The fact that fighting has taken place at Loivre indicates that the enemy are nearer Rheims than had been generally supposed.

The repeated references in the official communiques to operations led to the idea.

On other portions of the front the news is satisfactory. With both forces acting on the offensive the fighting from the North Sea down to Armentieres is being conducted with even greater violence than usual, but apparently with just as little success to German arms.

The official reports made it evident that there had been a heavy German attack south of Ypres where as well as at all other portions of he British front, the enemy had ben energetically repulsed.

The Russians continue to advance in East Prussia, Poland and Galicia, the Germans have been driven back after offering a stubborn resistance.

Other German forces are retiring on Kalch and further south the Russians have occupied Miechow, about 20 miles from Cracow.

Turkish forces apparently commanded by German officers have made another fierce attempt to recapture Kapriken from the Russians. They were repulsed and the Russians occupied further positions.

South African rebels have been defeated at Bloemfontain 64 miles North of Pretoria with a loss of 120 killed and wounded. The Loyalists lost 23 killed and wounded.
