We needed true independent

WITH the police and crime commissioner election fast approaching, I note a few letters from former police officers supporting the Independent candidate Mr Johnston, whose whole campaign appears to centre around the issue that he’s a former policeman.

I believe that following the numerous shocking revelations such as the Hillsborough cover up and police failure to take action on press phone hacking, with some officer in the pay of the press, I would argue that the last thing we need is a former policeman as commissioner. We need someone who can act without fear or favour, someone who is truly independent of the very services they seek to manage and not constrained by past friendships and allegiances.

Cllr Nigel Dix, Blackwood

Probably 99% of job vacancies in the UK ask potential candidates if they have any experience of the job that they are applying for. Some jobs state 'only experienced people need apply'. To throw the Hillsborough disaster at Ian Johnston must be the lowest form of smear Ive have ever known. Well I know quite a few people who will be voting for Mr Johnston and hes certainly the most experienced Candidate for the job. Goodluck !!!

Clr Dix comments are nothing less than disgraceful. To attempt to make political gain from what happened 23 years ago, when 96 football supporters lost their lives, are in my view a resignation issue. Mr Dix you should hang your head in shame.
Are you seriously blaming Ian Johnston or Chris Wright for what happened that day...unbelievable.
