WITH the police and crime commissioner election fast approaching, I note a few letters from former police officers supporting the Independent candidate Mr Johnston, whose whole campaign appears to centre around the issue that he’s a former policeman.

I believe that following the numerous shocking revelations such as the Hillsborough cover up and police failure to take action on press phone hacking, with some officer in the pay of the press, I would argue that the last thing we need is a former policeman as commissioner. We need someone who can act without fear or favour, someone who is truly independent of the very services they seek to manage and not constrained by past friendships and allegiances.
