I SHARE PC Neilson’s outrage. There are many atheists who are the embodiment of compassion for their fellow men, whose lives have quality.
Where I disagree with him is his statement that atheism is the truth and the only reason people believe in a God is because their considerations are limited to reward or judgement. Such is most certainly not the case. I know a number of scientists who are theists because they have looked at the evidence for Christianity and are convinced. I have cited in the Argus, Einstein, Newton, Professor Alister McGrath (molecular phycisist, historian and theologian); Professor Francis Collins (physician and geneticist), and Professor Stephen Palmer (Cochran Professor of Epidemology and Public Health). Einstein was convinced of a creator.
The others are committed Christians. I would ask Mr Neilson to consider: does he really think that these men embraced their beliefs because of the mundane and sordid reasons that he suggests? Or were they motivated by much higher considerations? The suggestion that people only belief in God because they cannot face reality is an old and tasteless chestnut.
