I REFER to recent letters from Councillor Dix.
He links Ian Johnston’s name with the tragic events at Hillsborough 23 years ago as a reason why he should not stand for Police Commissioner. Following Mr Dix’s reasoning, after the convictions of a number of MPs for dishonesty, how can a politician stand? For the few who tarnished Westminster’s image, there are thousands of politicians who give honest and humble years of exemplary service. The same applies to the police service. Mr Dix makes much of ex-colleagues writing in letters of support for Mr Johnston. What is wrong with that? Another letter attacks Ian’s independence because a member of Plaid stated her view that Ian Johnston is the best man for the job. Now a local Labour MP is asking for Plaid members to support them. This is what Ian has done all along, reaching out to people whatever their political persuasion.
Ian Johnston’s stance “Keep politics out of policing” and his pledge to “Be the voice of all people of Gwent” is the right one. The oath of impartiality will be his core belief.
