WITHIN days of the council switching off the street light between 10pm and 6am, someone with no respect for other people’s property kicked the wing mirror off my daughter’s car.

To add to the cost of obtaining a replacement, I could have also wasted police time by reporting this crime to ensure that the stats show the increase in crime due to this misguided policy, but what’s the point? The council didn’t listen to its own councillors, so is unlikely to listen to one of its residents. And no-one will be caught. However, I did initially look at Gwent Police’s website and, using the postcode search, found my ward priority is antisocial behaviour, and under its top tips the advice: if you can’t park your car off road, then park it in a place that’s well lit. I do of course have the ability to vote at the next council elections for a councillor who listens to their electorate and considers all the effects of policies that are more than a simple cost-saving exercise so that they can waste money elsewhere on their grandiose plans for the city centre.
