Barrage does not add up

I READ with interest the latest report regarding the fact a recent report by an energy expert suggests a barrage is not the appropriate way to generate electricity from the Severn. This is based upon the cost issue insofar as this structure is concerned. Some three or four years ago I wrote to your paper highlighting the fact one of the leading experts in this field of expertise had reported to the Wye Valley Preservation Trust.

Their conclusions were in advance of the recent study (and confirmed by the latter) that a similar level of power could be generated by use of the tidal power generating it from booms from headlands etc. Whilst Peter Hain may be an expert upon soil excavation, one questions his interest in water!

Knowing our governments and service providers, whatever we use will not prove any cheaper to use ! We are still paying for two bridges over the Severn... which should have been provided for free use instead of taxing people to come and go from here to England. It strangled our economy. A free roadway via the barrage would bring millions into Wales. I don't think this should be ignored in favour of a few birds nesting or something.

A barrage would cost Wales Billions. THe amount of electricity would not be great and it would be very expensive so would have to be massively subsidised by the WAG. Have they got several Billion to spare?

Oh dear Bob, are you honestly telling us that 5% + of the Uk's electric is not much? As for the cost, Hain seems confident they can get private financing in place and the WAG would not be subsidising it.

Good try Bob but no brownie points.
