THE recent trial and acquittal of cab driver David Johnson at Cardiff Crown Court on the charge of causing the death of a cyclist by careless driving (Argus, May 3) raised disturbing issues.

While I fully sympathise with the family of the deceased for their loss, according to the evidence, he ignored the traffic lights when attempting to cross the road and therein lies the real problem. Time and time again you see cyclists and pedestrians doing just that, but the police in this country rarely, if ever, prosecute them for any offence. Most countries in Western Europe and the Americas are generally more strict and the fatality rates are correspondingly much lower.

However, referring to the trial, Mr Johnson was found not guilty at the direction of the judge because the evidence was not good enough.

Why didn’t the police or CPS realise that?
