REGARDING the Chartist mural, although there were plans to produce a replica of the mural and locate it on the stairs at Newport Museum, it was stated in the Argus a few weeks ago that the museum, library and reference library were to close and to be moved to the Newport Centre.
What the council should have done years ago would have been to buy the Westgate Hotel when it was for sale, turn it into a Chartist museum with replica soldiers with guns in the window of what is now Starbucks and statues representing the Chartists outside. The statues at present outside should have been moved inside.
The existing museum, library and reference library should have been moved into the Westgate, and the museum could have been extended to include more exhibits.
A vinyl replica of the existing mural could be produced fairly cheaply and could be displayed on the concrete front of the BHS shop.
