AS MY local library at Stow Hill is now closed, I rely on my daughter to request and collect books for me from Central Library.
Out of a list of five books, all good novels by well known authors, three were not available, owing to them having been taken out and not returned.
As fines are now 27p per day the cost of forgetting to return several books for one week may discourage borrowers from returning them.
These excessive fines will also deter people from using the library and I am sure the cost of replacing missing books far outweighs the money coming in from fines.
