MR WILLIAMS describes my view that chief constable Carmel Napier is not obliged to account for her sudden retirement as ‘asinine’ (Argus, June 12).
Bizarrely, he thinks that if I were to resign today as a Pontllanfraith councillor, then the people in my ward “would not be given any reason for this”.
But Mr Williams has missed my point.
If I as an elected councillor were to resign, I would be accountable to voters in Pontllanfraith, and I am of course happy to hold myself accountable to them.
If police and crime commissioner Johnston forced chief constable Napier out of office, then as an elected official, he is accountable for that to the voters of Gwent.
But Carmel Napier was not an elected official – she was an employee of Gwent Police.
So she is not accountable to voters for her private decision, in the way that elected officials are accountable for their actions.
Cllr Gez Kirby Pontllanfraith Blackwood
