WE are now nearly at the end of the local remembrance events and it has been very good over the last month or so to see the reports in the Argus of the individual celebrations that have been held.

We must commend all those who have so very carefully made the arrangements for these events and also those who took part in them.

However, I feel that I must draw your attention to the large error contained in your report on the service which was held recently at Duffryn High School, and in particular, the photograph which accompanied the report. The grey-haired gentleman in the front of the photograph is not, as you have stated in the caption, Professor Harrison, but is in fact David Jones of the Newport Stedfast Band. At the time of the photograph he was sounding “Last Post”, and not, as your caption stated, “Calon Lan”. Indeed, if he had been playing Calon Lan, he would have been in line for the Nobel Prize for Music, for this piece does not lend itself to the Bugle.

For well over 30 years David has given his services freely to the Royal British Legion, various regimental organisations, Schools and many other causes which require a Bugler, but for some unknown reason he never seems to get a mention, not that he minds that, but it would be very nice once in a while if he could get the recognition he deserves.
