Safety concerns

IN APPLYING the ideologically-led Con/Dem government’s austerity programme, Torfaen council are planning to remove certain ‘lollipop’ ladies/men from their posts in order to save cash.

As our ‘lollipop’ people play a vital role in ensuring our children are protected from traffic when they cross the road, the logical conclusion we can all come to is that Torfaen council have little regard for the safety of our children.

I must remind councillors that not everyone whilst driving observes the red light on our pelican crossings but they do stop for our ‘lollipop’ operatives.

If you think I am being over the top regarding cars going through red lights, I have observed four incidents so far this month at Edlogan Way, Park Road, Pontypool and Clarence Corner, Pontypool, twice.

So, as these cuts are totally unnecessary, I ask, along with trade unions like the RMT, that Torfaen council, to fight the cuts, don’t implement them. Our children deserve better.

I am in something of a quandary.

I am loath to agree with Terry Banfield on principle, and yet for once I find myself doing exactly that.

Well on the subject of abolishing lollipop operatives maybe but you could at least berate him for blaming the Westminster government with whom it is wholly unconnected.

I read this one as placing the blame squarely on Torfaen council's shoulders.

Affter all, the coalition government _has_ instigated an austerity programme which has led to councils needing to make cuts. It just so happens that in this case, the council have decided to cut a highly visible and useful service rather than targetting the endemic waste which seems to afflict most public bodies.

This is the same Torfaen which rolled over and played dead for the Welsh Language Cardiff Bay gestapo because three people complained? How many complaints will it take to get the 'no lollipop' policy reversed? A lot more than three. Why? Well because medieval tripe is sacrosanct here, kids lives aren't.

Yes, proving yet again how much of a waste of space and profligate this council is. Not that it is alone, it pretty well sums up all councils, none worse than the premier one that sits in Westminster.

Get shut of the workers, but keep the shirkers, most of whom would drop dead from shock if handed a shovel or a hammer and saw, and directed to do a real job..

a absolutely stupid letter its got nothing to do with the coalition but priorities at the local councils is this not the council that employs someone full time to maintain the welsh language element of their web site.

Im pleased that cuts are being made at these bloated council offices you should write to them and ask why they do not sack one of the many layers of managers instead of the lolly pop lady.

Lollipop Ladies have nothing at all to do with Westminster. It is a local council responsibility, I suggest Terry contacts his local councillor
