Pitch is crowded

First published in Letters

WHAT a disastrous move to Rodney Parade it has turned out for Newport County, three matches off already with a possibility of a fourth with Plymouth, inspection to come.

It was never going to work with three teams playing on the same pitch.

Why wasn’t Spytty kept as a backup?

Some of these matches could have been play at Spytty.

After all Gateshead played at seven different grounds last season to avoid a fixture pile-up.

The sooner the County find their own ground the better, after all Newport Rugby supporters don’t want us there anyway - some even wrote to the Argus to this effect.

The Football League would not have allowed us to be promoted were it not for Rodney Parade. Here endeth the argument.

Part of the problem is with the grass cut so short, 3/4" there are no blades of grass to lose moisture as would normally happen .Before the football cut we only had one game cancelled because of the rain and that was after a freak storm.

Most of the Rugby supporters also like the Country being there, only the few disgruntled Rugby supporters who's team lose have a moan....

That's not true. Newport Stadium had a Grade A certificate from the FA and could hold Football League matches albeit that it would have been almost the smallest ground in the league. It had, at the time, sufficient capacity (5,000) including sufficient seats. It has enough turnstiles and a high standard of floodlighting (a lot better than Rodney Parade has). The decision to relocate to RP was not a necessary one but it was right to take up the opportunity of using the much larger more centrally located stadium. Unfortunately it's turning into a nightmare. Already 1 in 5 of the matches scheduled to be played there by County have been postponed. This season's total is already 4 and in a few days I believe it will be 6. We may lose the manager over this problem and it's a disaster . But no-one could have foreseen this happening and it's all very unfortunate indeed.

Hang on everyone unless somebody's got a hot line to God there's not a lot can be done at the moment. It's very frustrating for all concerned particularly
for the County as they still have a chance of promotion but we cannot control the weather. When the drainage is completed in the close season it should be a lot better and hopefully we wont have another winter as wet as this one for a long time.
