IT’S NICE to know that Newport City Council have the council taxpayers’ interest at heart and try and save money wherever they can.

So with the introduction of the new smaller wheelie bins, I said goodbye to my old trusty bin that had a number of scars after going into combat with the huge truck that comes around fortnightly and handling by those very rough men that accompany it.

And so today my new smaller wheelie bin was put out for combat for the first time along with his comrades from the other 11 houses in the cul-de-sac where I live.

Sadly three of these new and unbloodied recruits failed to return from their first sortie and were swallowed up by the large aggressor that returns every fortnight – 25% casualties in the first operation and I doubt if the true toll of casualties on their first operations in the whole of Newport will ever be truly known. RIP.
