Pothole problem

I would like to take this opportunity to invite Mr John Cunningham to come along to Blaenavon (pothole town) to see for himself the disgusting state of our roads.

I would say about 80 per cent of our roads are in a deplorable condition.

Upper Coed Cae, which has to be the worst in the area, Catholic Hill, Hillside Avenue, Elgam Avenue near the fish shop, Waun Street, High Street – these are to name but a few.

It is impossible to dodge all the potholes.

We have much better car parks than roads.

It is about time something was done about these conditions.

Jan Reed, Giles Road, Blaevavon

The problem is that the policy in recent years has been to patch up potholes with a little tarmac. Unsurprisingly, the patch doesn't last long and the pothole comes back even bigger than before. Meanwhile new potholes are also forming elswhere on the road to again be patched up.

These temporary road repairs are a false economy and just act to store up even more problems for the future - but since that comes out of next year's budget the council of the day aren't too worried about that
