End of city?

First published in Letters

’VE JUST read my copy of Newport Matters and I see that Edwina Hart has given £4million to Newport in the first phase of the Cardiff Capital Metro plan. Is this the first phase of Newport becoming a part of Greater Cardiff, a district like Splott or Ely? Dave Woolven, Aspen Way, Malpas Park, Newport

Much as I think Newport has had a raw deal compared to its much favoured neighbour and perhaps the Metro could have a more inclusive name, being part of it should benefit Newport much as areas included in Dublin's DART network do. That's the Dublin Area Rapid Transit.

A bit of spin here as usual. Grants for public transport works are being given a 'Cardiff Metro' label to give the (false) impression of some strategic scheme. The Cardiff Metro remains a loose concept at best.

Cardiff is definitely in Wales though, so you would be stuck with the WAG. You should concentrate your efforts on the fact that Monmouthshire is historically part of England. Campaign for a restoration of the Rhymney river as the England/Wales boundary!

Mrs Edwina Hart, can you give just £200.000 to Newport City Council to refurbish the paddling pool at Tredegar Park for our Kids to play in over the school holidays....Nice to promise £4 Million for the future Metro, but just as nice to rebuild that pool for present day enjoyment....

This is happening all the time in England as 'London' spreads every outwards to encompass the entire south east of England. It'll be up to the severn bridge at some point ! Wales major cities (And Newport isn't one of them), will just get added a la 'Greater Cardiff'. But at least a Cardiff postcode is one up on a Newport one.

I've just spent a lovely weekend in Cardiff, lots to do, great food, great comedy, great bars and transport. This sh*thole could do worse than becoming a district of Cardiff. Perhaps we'd have funding and facilities if we did?

From the coldra on, Newport looks pretty fine as you head out, hence why Terry Mathews sites his business there, as you head down chepstow road toward Newport town centre the tumbleweed is pretty obvious and the area rapidly looks run-down. Streets are overgrown and not kept clear, dog mess all over the pavements, chewing gum stuck on everything, endless flats with bins left outside. First images count, It's unsurprising that at the coldra people just turn around and had back out. Frankly I don't think Cardiff wants us.

Ely & Grangetown have CF postcodes and I wouldn't want to live in either of those.
