In response to the editor’s article: Could education still survive at campus? I would repeat my suggestion given in my letter of Tuesday September 16, that it would be better to gradually modernise Caerleon campus over, say, a 10-year period.

The editor mentions in his article that the future regeneration of Newport is vital and that a city campus is essential to that regeneration.

Yes it is, however, it is even more important that the site of the campus is acceptable to the students. The folk of Newport have been deprived of modern, quality entertainment and cultural venues for many decades.

The majority of Newport and Gwent folk cannot afford to travel to Cardiff for their entertainment and cultural ‘fix’. I suspect that this is the real reason why the number of students applying for courses in Newport has diminished.

It will probably take about 10 years for Newport city centre to come up to the standard of most other UK cities of comparable size. Therefore, it would be sensible to extend the Newport city centre campus only when the city centre is ready.
