WELL it’s nice to know, care of Carwyn Jones, that after the Scottish voting, the old union is dead. So, we are left with the question, what is going to happen with the new one?

Personally, as a Welshman, I wasn’t given the chance to choose whether Scotland should be allowed to stay in. I mean, to paraphrase The Life of Brian, what have the Scots ever done for us?

I have dim recollections of being force fed porridge as a toddler and I’ll admit to being somewhat over fond of their amber tincture, but apart from all that, well...

Come to that, I’m not that fussed about the English either, prancing about on their side of the border, all Eton-posh or Essex-vulgar. Still, they do have to pay the Severn Bridge toll before we let them in, so I guess that squares things, just a little.

As for the Irish, well, there’s a whole sea between us and them, isn’t there, and there’s a bunch of friendly ones down the pub who’ll stand me a pint if I play my cards right.

So, on the whole, I think a referendum can be an interesting and entertaining prospect. Let’s just make it on Europe next time.
