It would seem that Newport City Council had an excellent debate on 23rd September about WAG suggestions for local government reorganisation.

Always a contentious and potentially expensive topic. It seems to re-incarnate every 20 years and the fact that Wales is very over-governed at all levels is pushed aside.

Having got rid of the old county councils in the 90s, WAG are now proposing a new version of them.

In Newport’s case a combination with Monmouthshire is their favourite, even though they are so very different in area and politics. Newport rejects this solution.

An ideal answer, to give a workable size for major services, would be for Newport to become a city region to include the M4 corridor, and the areas around Cwmbran, Pontypool and the Western Valley as far as Blackwood.

Not sure where that leaves rural and scenic Monmouthshire, but maybe a large rural region taking in a good chunk of Powys. The Williams Commission are now inviting comments, I think, so the progress of change will be fascinating to watch.
