FOR THE first time ever, on a dark autumn evening, I used the bus stop beneath the car park opposite the railway station.

As an ‘anorak’, I like travelling by bus and have done in very many places, however, I cannot recall a bus stop that matches this location for a misplaced facility. Not only is the environment, even in the early evening, unpleasant, it has all the promise of getting worse for those wishing to use the R1, 56 and 50 services.

Those comments aside, this bus stop is in a 20 mph speed limit. Watch, you would never believed it! Accepted, it is not possible to visually assess speed limits totally accurately, give or take 5 mph, but it is possible to observe those driving well over 20.mph. Here, surely, is a place for speed cameras. The worst culprits, of course, many private car drivers, but worryingly, professional drivers - taxis and bus drivers. Speed is the major problem, but also noise pollution.

Perhaps the limit really is there for a purpose. Why then is it not enforced? Further, what is the problem in relocating this bus stop to a more friendly location for services to the valleys? Going home, away from Newport, is one reason not to go there.
