AT THE October TUC Congress, the Society of Radiographers (SOR) agreed to remit its motion on gender termination. This means, according to the SOR’s October magazine that it has been submitted to the General Council without having to be debated by the Conference.

This is not surprising as the motion called on the TUC to campaign for changes to the 1967 Abortion Act to restrict the use of gender termination. The motion also asked the Department of Health to issue a policy statement on the use of ultrasound to determine the sex of the foetus where the intention is to abort on terms of gender. The SOR’s magazine report said “some unions expressed concerns about the motion as there were worries it would restrict teh right of women to choose”.

The interpretation of the Abortion Act act leading to 200,000 UK abortions annually is ludicrous and clearly the Abortion Law is being abused. We, the Society for the Protection of Unborn Children (SPUC) would suggest that most abortions performed on mental health grounds are abortion miscertification, and real implementation of this law would relieve pressure on GPs to sign for abortion on mental health grounds.
