LEADER of Caerphilly Nationalist councillors, Cllr Colin Mann, has welcomed the Caerphilly Council Labour cabinet’s decision to cut their own allowances by five per cent, noting the initiative comes at a time when the people of the county borough are facing cuts in services (Argus letters, October 22).

Yet typically, Cllr Mann’s magnanimity is spoiled by criticism that the gesture is long overdue.

Isn’t it odd of Cllr Mann to criticise the Caerphilly Council Labour leadership’s self-sacrifice, but remain strangely silent when it comes to his own generous allowance of £22,000?

And is this the same Cllr Mann who announced several months ago that neither he nor his Plaid Cymru colleagues would accept an allowance increase of one per cent – yet go on to accept the one per cent pay rise anyway?

It seems Cllr Mann’s rank hypocrisy knows no bounds.
