THANKS to Mr Cyril Pearce for his article defending the NHS. For the past few weeks, I have been an in-patient on Ward D4 West at the Royal Gwent Hospital. One constantly reads criticism of this hospital, however I can only write of my own experience, referring to the first class treatment I received.

Nursing staff, both day and night shifts, expressed professional care to each individual, whatever their needs. As a nurse, retired long past, under matron’s jurisdiction, one can’t fail to observe etiquette and dedication given. This team was a glowing example and a credit to the profession.

Doctors are rarely mentioned on this subject, however, I would like to comment. the registrar, Dr Davies – his gift of caring was exceptional, remaining on the ward for long hours, reassuring not only the patients, but their relatives.

Thanks also to the ancilliary staff, porters, etc. God bless you all.
