FOR THE essential safety of our school children, Gwent Police have wisely enforced a “No Parking” policy at our city’s school entrances.
The outstanding exception is the Glan Usk primary and nursery school on the Glebelands Park.
Access to and from the school is very difficult.
This is due to the traffic lights and problems caused by the one-lane humpback bridge entrance to the park and long traffic tailbacks along (residential) Bank Street, which acts as the main access route to the school of 500 pupils.
Again, on Wednesday, January 14, at 2.15pm on this inclining street, a 50-seater coach parked up alongside the pavement a few yards from the bridge’s traffic lights, obviously unable to negotiate the narrow bridge.
A schoolteacher with no high-visibility apparel directed and held up the two-way traffic while the bus load of children walked across the road.
Perhaps the Glan Usk school’s (PFI) budget could be used to hire a lollipop lady or gent as the Bank Street maintenance and resurfacing is part of the original Glebelands plan!
Extra safety measures are needed on the dangerous and inclining Bank Street.
