I FAIL to understand why anyone should be surprised or dismayed by Newport Council’s wise decision not to open public toilets in Tredegar Park until 2pm.

Surely, it’s common knowledge that nobody ever has any need to use a toilet until mid-afternoon, especially small children whose bladder retention capacities are legendary.

After all, the council has generously provided climbing frames, slides and all the other proponents of juvenile over-excitement.

Why should it then be expected to encourage its premature release in valuable municipal premises? Just think of the cost in cleaning, not to mention the very real danger of employees being trampled in the stampede as they open the doors.

The council, like nanny, always knows best. That’s why we elected them.

To doubt would be to take the first step in the descent into the dark, swirling chaos of toilet over-availability. And that would never do.
