PERHAPS we should hang fire before condemning out of hand the 18% pay rise the National Assembly has effectively awarded itself, despite the occasional bleatings and protests of individual members. After all, we may all reasonably expect something like the 1% rise that seem to conform to government guidelines. The Assembly is most certainly entitled to nothing less.
So let’s see; this leaves a further 17% which we may as a nation have every right to demand the members make up in increased productivity. If they can provide incontrovertible proof that they have achieved this by the end of the fiscal year then we shall have no cause for complaint and they will have deserved to keep the money . If not .... well, all I can offer them is the advice given by an 18th century US government to its starving and persecuted reservation indians – “Endeavour to persevere.”
