IT seems somewhat ironic that local politicians and the police recently held a meeting in Pill in Newport to discuss accommodating a designated brothel in the area, to take, I assume, prostitutes off the streets. Ironic because only recently the Welsh Assembly has been promoting the fight against human trafficking going on in Wales. Prostitution is the end result of human trafficking for women. Is that what they want to promote?
By definition all victims of “human trafficking” are trafficked into an existing commercial sex market. Prostitution is inherently harmful, whether legal or illegal. All those people who benefit in any way from the sexual exploitation of people entrapped in the commercial sex market, be they pimps, brothel owners, escort agencies or any other exploiters should be hit with the full force of the law, prosecuted and jailed. Additionally, to help this along, the purchase of sex should be a criminal offence (this legislation has recently been introduced in Northern Ireland so there is hope for Wales and the rest of the UK). I suggest those promoting this idea have a look at www.watw.org.uk an organisation which helps women affected by prostitution.
