IN my letter to the South Wales Argus: ‘Don’t agree’ August 14. My ‘don’t agree’ statement referred to Paul Flynn’s opinion, regarding the artistic impression of the proposed ‘old Sainsbury’s site’ development. He likened the buildings as grey, concrete, Romanian, Ceausescu-like.
If readers carefully look at the artist impression, they will see that the buildings are predominantly glass fronted (with, possibly, tinted glass) – in fact, like many of the new buildings ‘mushrooming’ in the centre of Cardiff.
However, I do agree with Mr Flynn’s assessment of the proposed, residential/student, occupancy for the site.
There is no need for 600 student residences. The University of South Wales’s presence, in Newport, is virtually ‘spectral’. The site would be totally unsuitable for students.
I would suggest that the proposed buildings be modified/adapted to house, long-term, local residents, or temporary accommodation for some current residents while the remainder of Crindau undergoes its long overdue redevelopment.
When the Welsh Conference building is completed, at the Celtic Manor Resort, there will be a massive demand for good quality hotel accommodation in the Newport area.
