THE anti-smoking lobby is absurd. Packets of cigarettes are hidden by curtains and the right of the consumer to information has gone.
ASH (Action on Smoking and Health) claim that cigarette packets are too attractive.
They are referring to the words and numbers on the box.
For example, the Independent Tobacco company has the brand name of “Number Three” but like the rest, the number 20 has disappeared from the box.
Consumers now do not know how many cigarettes are in the box. Some boxes contain ten; other boxes contain 18 or 19 or 20. The right to compare the market has gone.
Consumers have to guess what brands are available and how many are in the box. Consumers need a slide rule to work out what box to buy.
Consumers have a right to more information to obtain the best deals under the Trade Exemption Act, smokers have the right to more information.
Smokers do not know whether to buy Independent or Imperial or BAT (British American Tobacco).
Smokers do not know which country the products are coming from and where they are manufactured.
ASH is an extreme organisation, it is illegal and absurd.
