WITH the refusal of Newport City Council to grant planning permission for the new Welsh school down at the Lighthouse Road at the existing Duffryn school, it beggars belief that they ever granted permission for any building in that area in the many decades past.
Many Newport people alive today will remember the flooding that took place every year and in my case during the 1950s/60s of Tredegar Park, Cardiff Road, the chestnut field where the Wafer factory and BSO offices now stand and the Lighthouse Road right down to Cuckoo Bridge.
This area was always a flood plain and if the conditions are right it will also be again not just to the school but to the Duffryn estate.
I wonder why it’s taken so long for the council to realise the potential hazard of flooding in that area when even in the late 1950s they built the Duffryn school which was initially planned in the very early 1950s and the very serious flooding that was taking place at the time.
