PLEASE may I congratulate Kirsty Williams AM on her appointment as the first non-Labour education minister/secretary after 17 years of Labour leadership at our Assembly.
As a Liberal Democrat she cannot be influenced by public sector trade unions at Labour ward party meetings.
Can we expect action on the number of teachers going absent – in particular with alleged stress? Fifty-thousand days lost last year, at a cost £130 million from the Welsh economy, paid to agencies supplying stand-in teachers?
Her appointment allows her to think outside the box.
Will she audit trail those teachers allegedly suffering stress in the classroom.
Let’s hope she will investigate the poor leadership within some schools, which can result in significant disruption affecting students’ education.
If in doubt check the Pisa results.
I hope she can be convinced of the merits in incentivising our higher education young talent to stay or return to Wales, supporting our communities after their studies.
We have to rebuild our economy within budget. Labour’s wait and see further education funding policy was a political fudge given the financial facts.
Kirsty should know more than most, when a political party makes a commitment to students it’s best to be fully transparent .
