SOME of the arguments put forward by Brexit supporters are at best an attempt to muddy the waters, or at worst, in Churchill’s famous words “terminological inexactitudes” – that is blatant lies.
The following facts may help those who do not normally follow politics and who may be confused by the avalanche of informed evidence from the one side and rhetoric from the other.
1. Each of the 28 members of the EU has a veto on Turkey or any other country joining.
2. France has a double veto, since in addition, an application by another country to join would also need to be approved in a referendum of the French people.
3. Vladimir Putin supports Brexit, as do Donald Trump and Boris Johnson.
4. Every living ex-prime minister favours remaining.
5. In addition to David Cameron and Jeremy Corbyn, the leaders of the Liberal Democrats, Plaid Cymru and the SNP favour staying, as do all of Wales’ labour MPs and AMs.
6. British farmers receive £10bn annually from the EU. Can you imagine what would happen to food prices if we left?
7. The EU offers a programme to reduce differences in social and economic conditions to help poorer areas such as Wales and Cornwall. Structural funds benefit Wales by £500 million annually and this had been agreed to continue until 2020.
Brexit supporters say “it is our money”, but at least we do receive it. Would a Brexit government in Westminster be so generous, indeed has Westminster ever been remotely generous to Wales, or to the other less well-off areas of Britain?
The UK is said to be the fifth richest country in the world. Why then risk leaving the EU, and by stepping into the unknown, returning to the state Britain was in in the 1960s?
