I PAY tribute to the huge sacrifices made by the service men and women who fought bravely during the First and Second World Wars, many giving their lives for our freedom. We owe them a profound debt of gratitude. The scale of these wars was immense – during the First World War 18 million people both military and civilian were killed; during the Second World War over 60 million.
Both world wars together killed nearly 80 million people and both wars started in Europe. If sitting round a table co-operatively in Brussels helps to put an end to war or reduce its risk, then I’m all for that.
