A REMAIN letter writer stated a Leave vote would send us back to the 60s! I can only wish!
Married in 1961, we moved into this new-build three-bedroom semi-detached with a mortgage based on my husband’s wages only. Permanent skilled, unskilled and admin work was plentifully available locally.
Most of my neighbours worked with Brit Nylon Spinners, Panteg Steelworks, Pilkingtons, Saunders Valves, or Girlings (three sites) in permanent superannuated contracts with holiday and sick pay.
Most works had social clubs, cricket, darts, bowls and football teams and other facilities free to employees.
New Inn village had three grocers and a butchers that all delivered, a greengrocer, ironmonger, wool /baby clothes shop and bank, an excellent small village school where school meals were cooked fresh on site.
A next day’s doctor’s appointment was available or just turn up at the surgery and wait. The local hospital had an A&E for serious matters. A regular bus service (Jones of Aberbeeg) ran until 11pm as few on my estate originally owned cars, and the local works ran their own buses for shift workers.
Return to the 60s? One can only dream and pigs might fly!
