IT’S very sad that when the country is pulling together and  remembering the sacrifice that all its citizens made during the First World War that an Argus letter writer should whinge on about not enough being done locally.
He says that other councils in the county have done more, as if it’s some sort of competition, I’d like to know what specific things he’s referring to!
Nationally millions of pounds have been set aside to mark the hundredth anniversary of the Great War and it’s up to interested parties to claim it.
In Newport we already have hundreds of memorials and many works of art, I cannot see what other tangible things the writer is thinking about.
For his information much is being planned in partnership with all the veterans groups, a number of the local schools, the museum and art gallery (Newport City Council), the local university, the health service, many voluntary organisations, artists and the church.
There are many events currently taking place, lectures, walks and performances. Perhaps your letter writer should speak to people, who I’m sure he knows, and get his facts correct.
