WELL, it certainly seems I have ruffled a few feathers with my letter about Newport City’s failure to mark events during the First World War.
Newport lost many individuals in battles and events that have been marked or will be marked by villages in Monmouthshire, where they honour(ed) the courage and bravery of their people.
In Newport, these brave men, women and children made the sacrifice to allow the council to waste £90 million on something that will be another white elephant, a debt which I doubt will ever be paid back.
And yet the council cannot afford a few hundred quid for a church service or whatever for these honourable events.
And yes, I am aware of the annual events that take place – but the 100th anniversaries of First World War battles are totally different.
The Cenotaph does not have one single name on it of anyone that died in wars from Newport – which was a surprise to one prominent Argus reporter.
Perhaps Andrew Frame can list the events that Newport has and is putting on to mark its First World War dead.
The only one I am aware of is the display in the museum and quite frankly, for a city the size of Newport, it’s a thorough disgrace.
“At the going down of the sun and in the morning, we will remember them” – but not in Newport.
