MRS Sylvia Cook is disappointed that our new local secondary school has been called “Islwyn High School” (Letters, July 21). Mrs Cook may be interested to know that “the body entrusted in the naming of this school” was the school’s own pupils – it was the children at Oakdale and Pontllanfraith comprehensives who chose the name, with the school’s interim governing body and the local education authority endorsing their choice.
I believe it’s a great name – and I’d be glad to arrange for Mrs Cook to visit when the school opens next Spring.
