THE closure of the BHS to join the other empty properties in Commercial and High Streets, the High Street/ Cambrian Road Arcade and probably half the market is starting to leave Newport looking sad again. What an impression people will have when they leave the new Premier Inn hotel and various residential projects when they are completed. Action is needed now before Newport deteriorates even further and the Friars Walk effect is spoilt. Perhaps one suggestion for consideration by Newport City Council is to look at the feasibility of relocation and encouraging existing business? Below Llanarth Street to the top end of Commercial and High Streets, the arcade and market. If relocation costs are met by the city and enough businesses are persuaded to relocate then perhaps the city centre will be saved. A smaller and properly equipped city centre will better serve Newport. We currently have far too many shops, etc. One further benefit will be the resultant empty properties becoming available for residential development within the city centre area.
