ONCE again we are to have imposed variable speed limits on our stretch of the M4. One wonders what this variation offers than the previous failed system could not. Probably only a cornucopia of fines to be syphoned from motorists’ pockets into the ever-hungry governmental coffers – some things never change. While on the subject, may I voice a serious concern that drivers are too preoccupied in checking their speedometers to concentrate adequately on the road and the surrounding traffic. It took only two collisions on Monday to cause a fifteen mile hold-up. We should expect a whole lot more of these in the future. What price gridlock?
