YET more dismal news today about isolated older people suffering alone. Silverline reports Lancashire as the loneliest place in the UK, and a survey conducted by Independent Age reveals that more than 1.8 million older people in the UK experience loneliness that is “out of control”. This is another wake-up call and it’s time for the government to prioritise funding on social care and services for older people. The government has an opportunity to send an important signal that older people matter by re-prioritising the social care brief and supporting services for older people, such as drop-in centres and libraries. Without action, support networks will continue to be eroded, and older people will fall through the cracks.
