I AGREE with the article at the foot of page 5 of today’s Argus that train services on the “Wales and borders” franchise should be publicly owned and run as a “not for profit” organisation like Welsh Water. I would like the franchise to go further with a corporate livery for carriages as follows: every carriage should have grass green lower panels, white upper panels and a red dragon emblem on the side panels of each carriage. Each carriage should be lettered: “Cambrian Railways.” Also in the tourist season there should be a few steam locomotives stationed at Cardiff operating tourist trains between Swansea and Holthead via Chester. The electrification of the main line between Paddington to Cardiff should be completed as soon as possible, with the extension to Swansea to follow, and this should be followed as soon as possible with electrification of the line from Crewe to Holyhead via Chester. The present relief line between Cardiff and Newport should be upgraded at the “Express Line.”
