REGARDING the letter by D Sheppard on March 23 in answer to my letter of March 17, my response is as follows:

He/she accuses me of attacking the present system and says that I am not “au fait” with modern educational needs.

In fact, had he/she read my letter again, it should have been realised that I am attacking the new system which will begin for the first time in September 2017. I stand by what I said.

A broad base of subjects at GCSE is vital for our youngsters. Very few will know at 14 years of age what they want to do as a career.Geography and languages are useful for trading and export. Also, would you really want the history of our countries and the world to be lost? What about the sacrifices made during the wars? The students can specialise in technical subjects, advanced level subjects or the very good apprenticeship schemes later.
