MR HOWELLS is rightly concerned about so-called ‘bed-blocking’ at the Royal Gwent Hospital (RGH) and proposes that the now-closed Ty Pontllanfraith “would be an ideal solution for the after care of patients...thus releasing the beds in the RGH and any other hospitals that are experiencing the same problems”, (Letters, 4th August).
Unfortunately Ty Pontllanfraith was closed due to the unaffordable cost of maintaining the deteriorating building.
The site will now be sold for residential homes development - including (at local Labour councillors’ insistence) many affordable homes.
It’s Tory Westminster government austerity cuts that are threatening our NHS’s ability to care properly for patients.
The sooner this minority Tory government collapses, the sooner we can elect a Labour government to end austerity and invest in our vital public services.
