In response to your correspondent Mr Ashton ( letters, 23 August ) it has long been established in law that BOTH men and women as autonomous individuals have absolute right over their own body.

That is why consent for any medical intervention is necessary.

So much for his logic!

It follows - also protected in law - that a man cannot prevent a woman from having an abortion, even if he is married to her. The foetus, as a developing, unviable, dependent entity has no independent rights of its own.
