NICE little article in Friday’s Argus about some of the old pubs of Newport by Martin Wade but the inclusion of Langton’s, which is not an old pub by any means if it ever was, and the Ridgeway I think was a mistake.

There are certainly many others that rightfully should have been included.

The other mistake is the location of the Salutation hotel which was on the corner of Cardiff Road and Commercial Road not street as Martin noted and again not where the police headquarters now stand.

The Salutation stood more or less on the town side of the MN memorial, opposite the former Prince of Wales pub and what became known as Gilligan’s Island.

On the Cardiff Road side of the Salutation was a small car sales garage called The Valley Car Company and a large lorry park that at one time hosted a small fairground.

The car park had large advertising billboards along the Cardiff Road side. Where the police headquarters are was the home of a brewery, Hancock’s, I think but possibly Phillips.
