THE PIECE in Saturdays Argus on John Morgan, last Lord Tredegar diminishes Tredegar House history with meaningless dates poured out and important ones inaccurately recorded with other failings.

Frederic George Morgan was born 1873, not 1908! Tredegar House was sold in 1951 but the agricultural estate, Ruperra being a tiny part of 50,000 acres bought by Eagle Star Insurance in 1956 as worthy Newport historian Roger Phillips reveals with Mynydd Eppynt and Bedwellty Common to the lush meadows of Ruperra, Llanvaches, Bassaleg and Nash.

These disposals were not at the whim of any good or bad Lord Tredegar, their actions were contained by the Trustees of the Tredegar Settled Land, Evan and John being merely tenants for life.

John and sister Avis Morgan were brought up Roman Catholics, to suggest they were converted (like Evan) is misleading. Johns last will pleads for his debts to be forgive.

Avis married in a Catholic Church in 1926 and left much of her estate to Catholic charities.

Johns cause of death is another guess. He died from bronchopneumonia, pancreatitis and intestinal haemorrhage.
